When Thomas Melia, an engineer for the City of Salinas Fire Department in California, was dispatched earlier this year on a medical call to an assisted-living facility, his routing app told him where to park the truck. But when he pulled into the sprawling multi-unit complex, the ambulance service that had already arrived was parked near the front door, far from the apartment in need. “It’s just a super long walk,” Melia said. His team had time to reposition the ambulance near the back door. “We looked and knew this unit is going to be right by the elevator by the back door.”
Beans.ai Raises $17M to Help Optimize the Final Foot
Beans.ai, a routing optimization provider that enables FedEx Ground and others to direct drivers to exact locations like apartment units, and provides other details like parking locations and delivery rules, has come out of stealth mode with a $17 million investment. Begun by veterans of Google, Uber and Yahoo, Beans.ai raised the funding from Saama Capital and Google veteran Amit Singhal, with participation from Venture Highway, Mubadala Capital and industry veterans Brian McClendon and Manik Gupta, among others. The founders say they have mapped 65% of the continental U.S. in the past three years, and plan to have it completely mapped within six months as the process has been optimized.
Google Rolls Out Fleet/Route Optimization Toolset
Given the vast amount of data streaming into its ubiquitous search engine every day, its various technology platforms and the ecommerce explosion, it’s only logical that Google is offering what it sees as a better mousetrap to solve the thorny problem of route optimization in last-mile deliveries. This puts Google into the territory of route and fleet optimization startups like Bringg and UPS unit Roadie, as well as newer entrants like Beans.ai, which interestingly was started by an architect of Google Earth and Google Maps.
Mapping the final foot: Beans.ai emerges with grand plans to optimize delivery
Several years ago, Nitin Gupta needed help. His mother had gone into shock and Gupta immediately called 911, summoning paramedics to his Mountain View, California, apartment complex. “Five or six minutes into my call they arrived at the building, but I couldn’t leave my mother alone [to guide them to the apartment] and it took them 15 minutes to find my unit,” he related to Modern Shipper in a recent interview.
What made peak shipping season a success?
By all accounts, the 2021 holiday peak season avoided the shipping disasters of previous years. There were likely several reasons for this, including consumers shopping earlier than ever and a push by the delivery firms to hire seasonal personnel. In fact, according to the founders of last-mile mapping firm Beans.ai, that last part played a significant role.

What I like the most is that it has taken a lot of the "thinking" out of efficient package delivery for a driver. The app has every bit of info a driver needs from where to find the package in the truck, to how to most effectively run his/her route and how to efficiently deliver to apartment complexes… Package Route does not have Beans apartment data and Beans has a much more dynamic pricing model which saves me money.
